Eastpoint SOftware - What is this new US ecommerce site to rival Amazon?

Eastpoint SOftware - What is this new US ecommerce site to rival Amazon?

What is Jet.com?

You might have heard about a new website called Jet.com. It's big news in the US, where shoppers can now sign up and test out the new ecommerce platform.

According to Jet, they want to offer customers the biggest possible   discounts, and it's main difference to Amazon is that it is a “shopping   club” and customers pay a subscription to shop there (this is a flat   fee, it doesn't get deducted from purchases or come with free shipping).

 Where am I saving money?

Jet claims that it can reduce costs for customers by suggesting that   they buy in bulk, buy items together, pick a slow shipping method, waive   return rights and pick a no-fee payment option. In addition, as Jet   itself makes money via the subscription fee rather than products sold,   in theory this also passes on a discount that vendors would otherwise be   paying to Jet.

Where did this ecommerce site pop up from?

Jet was founded by Marc Lore, not a stranger to large-scale ecommerce development. Lore founded ecommerce website Diapers.com, as well as off-shoots soap.com and wag.com  (great domain names to have). When Diapers became a rival to Amazon,   Amazon bought the company and Lore worked for Amazon for a couple of   years.

But soon Lore  moved on to new ecommerce ideas, and promptly received  heavy financial  backing for his new shopping club website Jet. And given  his track  record, it makes sense that investors were willing to take a  punt.  Investment was reported to be about $225m.

With such a high profile entrepreneur and stacks of cash behind the   new website, it was already well known before it even launched, with   many tech and ecommerce development blogs speculating on how it would   work and where the discounts would come from.

What is the ecommerce experience like?

The Jet ecommerce website launched in the summer and is now open to   membership – providing you have a US zip code. As we cannot use the   site, we have instead been listening out for feedback from US shoppers,   and found an interesting review from one of their first customers, who   used the website when it was in beta a few months back.

As with Amazon and other ecommerce websites, there is the likelihood   that if successful, this concept and brand will come over to the UK.   What do you think – would you pay £35 for subscription shopping?

smartphones and Mobiles are the UK's preferred internet browsing devices – Eastpoint Software

smartphones and Mobiles are the UK’s preferred internet browsing devices – Eastpoint Software

A  survey by Ofcom has revealed that the majority of people in the UK   prefer to go online using their mobile phone ahead of laptops, tablets,   and desktop computers.

It's the first time the survey has put smartphones on top, with laptops being the most popular previously.

How important is mobile app development?

So what does this mean for websites? If more people are viewing   websites and apps on their mobile, should development be prioritising   mobile-specific designs?

Our feeling is that the survey shows that mobile should, when   applicable, always be an option, but that it's often best alongside more   traditional software development.

People preferring mobile doesn't mean laptops are not being used.   Think of your own browsing habits. Do you reach for your mobile most of   the time all things considered, but prefer to make purchases on a  laptop  or desktop?

That is certainly the case for me. While I would have to pick mobile   for preferred device due to the amount of times a day I check emails and   new websites, I much prefer using my huge desktop monitor to view   websites. I would appreciate a mobile friendly website, but I also want   to be greedy and be able to see desktop designs and tablet-sized   websites too.

But  even so, for certain areas, mobile development is the way to go.  You  don't necessarily need to 'cover all bases' and it very much depends  on  your target consumers/users, as well as budget.

 What now for desktop development?

The survey shows a decline in website browsing via a desktop computer   as a preferred method, which is to be expected. How many people do you   know who still fire up a desktop pc at home?

But there are other factors to consider. Mostly, that checking your   phone to check something like a news headline is fine, but often people   will want a larger screen to do anything more involved. A lot of people   will still have desktop computers at work, and view websites via a   standard monitor while browsing on lunch breaks.

In terms of web design, desktop and laptop are covered by the same   scale design, so although less people prefer desktops, plenty of people   still use it, and plenty still prefer laptops. So a regular   “desktop/laptop” design (ie, the usual full size website or application)   should still be your first port of call in many situations.

The most important thing is to offer choice when possible, and take into account what will work best in specific circumstances.

Navigating web and mobile development – what should I get?

We always help our clients understand the pros and cons of creating   apps for different devices and, with their input, weigh up what is best   for them.

If a  client has a budget in mind, we make our suggestions for what we  think  might be a good starting point based on that budget, and how to  reach  the most people in the best way, for their spend.

Google's Android accounts for nearly half of the UK's mobile phones

Android app development enables you to have an app dedicated to Android devices, with no dodgy bits that look good if you have an iPhone.

One core app can be adapted to work well on a variety of devices (see our Mobile Apps page for options) but given the abundance of Android mobiles and tablets being used, it's often preferred to build an app specific to the device.

Our team are working more and more on mobile apps and would be thrilled to be part of your mobile app project.

Eastpoint Software Windows Mobile Application Development Company London, UK and Cambridge

Eastpoint Software Windows Mobile Application Development Company London, UK and Cambridge

Windows Mobile Apps Development Company London and UK:

Of the three main development platforms for mobile apps, Windows is the  little hitter. But it still has its place.Apps can be built specifically  to run on the Windows operating system for mobiles. Mobiles that use  Windows include Nokia, HTC, LG and Samsung.

Is Windows worth it?

It goes without saying that if you are targeting a group that is  known to use Windows phone, the choice is easy. If you are rolling out  an app for wide use across a diverse range of users, then your number of   Windows users becomes closer to the average, which may well be under   10%. But that percent could still count to a large or important number, and even if it doesn't, having a Windows-specific app not only caters to  those who use them (which they will appreciate) it also sets you up should Windows make a comeback.

Blackberry has an even smaller share than Windows (we've seen it   estimated at less than one percent of mobile phone users). But consider the main audience for Blackberrys – businesses. If a business has an   in-house app, or an app for a particular sector, if that sector uses   Blackberrys, then the overall usage doesn't matter. That particular app should be built for Blackberry.

If you are building a more generic app and you want to reach as many   people as possible, Android or IOS is currently a safer bet than Windows.

What kind of market share does Windows have?

iOS and Android account for the majority of mobile phones operating   systems in the UK. The percentage of people who use Windows phones is   much lower than these two dominating forces – of all of those with   phones, the percentage of those using a Windows phone doesn't reach   double figures. But that small percentage of a whole could account for   your target audience!
