Windows, Android and iOS Mobile App Trends and it's Usage – Eastpoint Software

Windows, Android and iOS Mobile App Trends and it’s Usage – Eastpoint SoftwareWindowsA US study has revealed mobile app and website browsing habits.

The report, by the Interactive Advertising Bureau, shows how users are accessing the internet, how long they are online, and their favourite websites and apps (Facebook and Amazon!).

Mobile app popularity

The report showed that during December 2015, 65% of minutes spent online were via a mobile device (tablet or smartphone). So in terms of time spent online on devices, a significantly larger amount of time is spent on mobile devices, accessing either websites or apps.

As more businesses look to mobile app development to cater for the amount of people using their smartphones to access the internet, these stats show this is a continuing trend. Year-on-year, comparing the month of December, there was also an increase on the amount of unique hits with a 7% increase for mobile and a 5% increase for smartphones.

Mobile apps absorb a huge amount of online time

When looking at online minutes spent purely on mobile devices, more of this time is spent on apps rather than websites. In fact the difference is huge – 86% on mobile apps, 16% on mobile web.

This difference does have a theory behind it. A mobile app is likely to be a game, music or chat app that you may use for prolonged periods, whereas a website is often something you take your information from, or make a purchase, and then leave.

Is Mobile App Development more relevant if your audience is younger?

When looking at iOS, Android and Windows Mobile Apps Development as an investment, or perhaps when considering a mobile version of your website, it's sensible to look at audience. Who is accessing your information and how? The IAB report suggests the difference between young people accessing apps and mobile web and older people isn't so big.

While people aged 18-34 spend two thirds of their time online via a mobile device, those aged 35-54 spend half of their online time on a mobile device. Both of these is an increase compared to last year.

Do websites get more hits from people using computers, or people using mobile devices?

Currently desktops are still top, with 68% of all website hits coming from computers, according to the study. However, mobiles at 32% are on the rise, whereas hits from computers are declining as a percentage of all hits.

What does this tell us about mobile apps?

Both mobile apps and mobile specific websites are getting increasing amounts of traffic. With the use of mobile devices for internet access increasing across age groups, it is becoming an essential marketing tool or function for businesses.

Shopping on your mobile continues to soar – Eastpoint Software

Shopping on your mobile continues to soar – Eastpoint Software

A study has shown that using smartphones to go online and shop is becoming increasingly popular. One of the points made last year for Black Friday, and in general, was that people will often browse on their mobile but are more likely to make purchases on a desktop or laptop computer.

But according to developers Moovweb, this is changing. Not only do more people use their phones to browse, but more people are buying on their smartphones, too.

Ecommerce report source material

Moovweb carried out their research in the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday in the US. Data was taken from 13.5million shopping visits, although the websites themselves used for were not given.

We're not just browsing with any more:

The general consensus is that a lot of shoppers will browse on their mobile and buy on a desktop or laptop. According to Moovweb, the amount of smartphone traffic increased by 45% compared to last year, and one in three of their tracked transactions was taken via a mobile device (either smartphone or tablet).

While that is significant, there is something even more significant for those considering investment in mobile shops and app development – the extra traffic wasn't just browsing.

The study showed that smartphone revenue rose by a staggering 81%. So while traffic nearly doubled, revenue taken outweighed this increased when compared to last year.

That means browsers are converting to buyers, and consumers are much happier to buy on their smartphones.

Average order value increase:

Moovweb's findings were that the AOV (average order value) of smartphone purchases did have a small boost of 2%. If shoppers are going to buy on their desktop, this will often be for the higher priced items. This increase could show that this norm is shifting too.

Black Friday sales hit £3.5b high in the UK – Eastpoint Software

Black Friday sales hit £3.5b high in the UK – Eastpoint Software
Since Black Friday is American, let's have a “pop quiz”. What year did Black Friday begin in the US?

It's 2010, only five years ago, but in the last couple of years it has really taken off the UK and already the phrases Black Friday and Cyber Monday are part of our vernacular.

According to statisticians at Experian and IMRG, a record £1.1billion was spent online in the UK on Black Friday, with the sale weekend estimated to have drummed up £3.5b in total.

On Black Friday, online sales were up an estimated 36% compared to last year, with Cyber Monday up by 31%.
Use of mobile phones to make an ecommerce purchase:

Our previous article on Black Friday mobile sales in the US showed this was a major growth area, with just over a third of sales taken via a mobile device (iOS proving more popular than Android, and smartphones winning over tablets).

Figures have not yet been released showing this breakdown, we will look at these once they are available. Knowing the popularity of shopping on smartphone, the blog at internetretailing. net did a snapshot of how mobile versions of website from the top 25 retailers were doing during the early stages of Black Friday. You can see the post here.

Shopping tracker company Springboard noted that retailers with reliable online shops would be the ones to benefit most from the sales. While we do not have the figures for mobile device sales, it is fair to say that shoppers will purchase through desktop, tablets and mobiles. Thinking about iOS and Android mobile development could help make sure you do not miss out on sales through these devices..

How did the websites and mobile apps cope with the traffic?

It seems mostly well, with a few of the large retailers leaving customers staring at a screen while it loaded, slowly and painfully.

According to consumers, Tesco's site was slow, although the company denied this was the case. John Lewis has a bit of a catastrophe ecommerce-wise, as their website was actually offline for an hour on Friday afternoon, although they said server capacity had been increased by a third in preparation.

Argos was also criticised. Consumers reported a slow website, with several crashes throughout the day. Argos also launched a new Fast Track delivery service prior to Black Friday, leaving them with a huge task, and some undelivered orders.

Massive Black Friday sales from mobile devices in the US – Eastpoint Software

Massive Black Friday sales from mobile devices in the US – Eastpoint SoftwareA report released by Adobe has shown that this year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday were the biggest ever in the US, with $11 billion in online sales during the long-weekend sale.

Adobe's estimates, based on aggregated anonymous data spread over millions of visits to thousands of websites, show other trends within the record spending.

Mobile shopping

As businesses mull over the worth and profitability of mobile app development or mobile-friendly versions of an existing website, figures continue to rise for the popularity of purchasing via a mobile device.

According to Adobe, sales via a mobile device accounted for 34% of sales, the majority of which were made on smartphones. Of those, iPhones were used for 67%, leaving Android with 33%. Sales via tablet were down a couple of percent to 15%. In the UK, iPhone and Android mobiles are split about about 50/50 in terms of use, so it's worth noting that this figure may be less relevant when considering the reach of iOS development versus Android mobile development in the UK.

Adobe also highlighted how shoppers like to browse via mobile too, accounting for 53% of shopping visits on Black Friday, split 40% for smartphones and 13% for tablet.

Mobile use in general was up on last year, and again singled out as a future growth area, this time by analysts Com Score, who have predicted a 14% rise on last year for holiday mobile sales.

What does this mean for retailers thinking of mobile development?

For those thinking of mobile versions of a site, or mobile friendly layouts, mobile sales aren't slowing down and iOS or Android mobile development would look to be a good investment.

Although consumers prefer desktop for certain purchases (usually higher priced items) it is clear that we're increasingly using our mobiles and tablets to make quick, convenient purchases.

If your site is not optimised for mobile, you could miss out on sales. It does depend on your target audience, but the expectation is that we want to be able to browse and buy on mobile devices.

Incidentally, according to Adobe the iPad Air 2 was one of the top sellers on Black Friday. Another little factoid from Adobe is that of the estimated $905m worth of purchases via mobile devices on Black Friday, iOS iPhone and iPads accounted for 75% of that total.

What about mobile ecommerce in the UK?

Ok, so these figures relate to the US. UK mobile shopping is usually in line with the US – we all know Black Friday itself is a US phenomenon based on the Thanksgiving weekend, which Brits have embraced in recent years.

However, if you'd prefer to just look at UK figures, please refer to our upcoming article on mobile device sales in the UK.

Stats Show Standard eCommerce Growth Over All at Black Fridays – Eastpoint Software

Are you waiting for Black Friday?

There were headlines recently that online retailers had experienced the  weakest August in terms of year-on-year growth since 2000.

The  growth for August was 5%, the smallest percentage since the IMRG  Capgemini index started recording retail sales data 15 years ago.

But  there is good news behind those isolated stats. Year-to-date figures  are up by a healthier 10% and Capgemini's head of digital, Alex  Smith-Bingham remains optimistic for retailers.

Ecommerce growth is “far more positive”

Mr  Smith-Bingham said that shoppers during August were most likely taking  advantage of the sun by shopping on the high street, and figures were  also affected by the late bank holidays.

IMRG's chief information  officer, Tina Spooner, said growth had been “far more positive” since  the index recorded a 7% growth in the first quarter of 2015, and  considered August's growth to be “a blip”.

Speaking to The  Guardian, IMRG's editor, Andy Mulcahy, also pointed out that sales would  likely rationalise over time anyway, and that in recent years, growth  had remained so buoyant because of the rise of mobile and tablet  ecommerce.

Nonetheless, IMRG identified five possible areas that  could have affected August's growth. These were: shopping reaching its  peak; disruption from the general election, strength of the pound  affecting custom from overseas buyers; people spending on leisure rather  that ecommerce; and shoppers holding out until Black Friday.

Will ecommerce boom again for Black Friday?

Earlier  this year, warnings were made by John Lewis about the negative impact  of Black Friday sales – namely that shoppers would buy Christmas  presents early at a discount and retailers would suffer overall.
It  remains to be seen how the rest of the year will pan out for ecommerce  sales, although a year-to-date growth of 10% suggests it has not  plateaued quite yet.

Next month will also give us a better idea  of whether shoppers are holding out for Black Friday, or if the  traditional American sale day is not as much of a draw this year.
